The Unprecedented Increase In Food Stamps

manhattan-insitute/Three years after the end of the 2007–09 recession, which officially began in December 2007 and ended in June 2009, 47 million people each month are using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). At the beginning of the recession, fewer than one in 10 Americans received SNAP benefits. Nearly 15 percent of Americans now use SNAP benefits, formerly called food stamps, a program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This translates to more than one in 7 Americans currently using SNAP benefits, a record non-emergency high.[2]
There is much concern surrounding this unprecedented increase in America's SNAP program, which began in 2008. Food stamp participation has always increased during a recession and in the initial stages of a recovery. The purpose of this report is to determine whether the recent increase in SNAP participation is comparable to increases during other recent recessions. Our results demonstrate that levels seen since the end of this recession are far higher than in prior recoveries (see Figure 1). While the 36 month periods following the recessions of the early 1980s saw decreases in food stamp usage, the recessions of the early 1990s and in 2001 saw increases between 1 and 2 percent over the same period, in comparison with an increase of 3.5 percent following the recession ending in 2009. In addition to the difficult job market, this is because of changes in the program that began in October 2008, including expansion of benefits and elimination of the cap for child care expenses.
History of Eligibility
Inception and Expansion of the Food Stamp Program
Since its inception on a national scale in 1964 through the Food Stamp Act of 1964, eligibility requirements have periodically been expanded and tightened with each reauthorization bill. Large increases in participation reflect not only population growth and economic variation, but also responses to eligibility changes. For instance, the program originally had a purchase requirement meaning that recipients were required to purchase food stamps, "paying an amount commensurate with their normal expenditures for food and receiving an amount of food stamps representing an opportunity more nearly to obtain a low-cost nutritionally adequate diet."[3] This requirement was later eliminated.
In 1971, P.L. 91-671 "Amendments to the 1964 Food Stamp Act" standardized national eligibility and work requirements. It also expanded the Food Stamp Program to Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 1974, P.L. 93-347, Domestic Food Assistance Program authorized USDA to pay 50 percent of states' administrative costs. There were 10 million participants in 1971. This grew to nearly 14 million in 1974.
Limitations in the Late 1970s and Early 1980s
The Food Stamp Act of 1977, which went into effect January 1, 1979, set the net income threshold for food stamps eligibility at 100 percent of the poverty line. For current eligibility thresholds, see Table 1. The 1977 Act also eliminated categorical eligibility and replaced a number of income deductions with a standard deduction. The Act restricted student and alien eligibility, and penalized household heads who voluntarily quit jobs. However, the resource limit was also increased. The most significant structural change to the program under this Act was the elimination of the purchase requirement. Once the purchase requirement was eliminated in January 1979, there was a 1.5 million increase in food stamp program participants. The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1981 added a gross income limit of 130 percent of poverty (for households with no elderly or disabled members).
Expansions in the Mid- to Late-1980s
In response to widespread domestic hunger problems, legislators eased requirements for participation. The resources limit was increased to $2,000, categorical eligibility was reinstituted, the homeless became eligible, and the advanced earned income tax credits were excluded from income calculations. Also, sales taxes on food stamp purchases were eliminated, and applying medical deductions was made easier.
Table 2 and Figures 2, 3, and 4 show the average income and benefit levels per participant in real terms from 1989 to 2010.

Limitations in the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunities Reconciliation Act of 1996
As can be seen in Figure 2, average income of program participants increased between 1996 and the early 2000s, after having declined slightly between 1989 and 1996. The 1996 welfare legislation eliminated eligibility of legal immigrants, placed a three month limit on Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) working less than 20 hours a week over 36 month period, reduced the maximum allotment, froze the standard deduction and minimum benefit, and revised provisions for disqualification.
Expansions and Changes in the Farm Bills of 2002 and 2008
In May 2002, the food stamp program was changed under the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act which restored eligibility of legal immigrants, indexed the standard deduction to inflation, incentivized state administration outcomes with performance bonuses, simplified eligibility processes for states by aligning them with other means-tested programs, and cut employment and training funds.

The increase in participation in 2008 was caused by a combination of widened benefit eligibility, the recession, and a concerted effort to expand access to benefits. The 2008 Farm Bill changed the name of the program from the Food Stamp Program to SNAP, in an effort to reduce the social stigma associated with receiving benefits. As of October 1, 2008, the minimum benefit and standard deduction for households were increased. The cap for child care expenses was also eliminated. There were also changes aimed at combating fraud, including disqualification of people who sold benefits or food obtained with SNAP benefits for cash, and the bill allowed the USDA more flexibility in setting consequences including fines and disqualification periods for retailers who engaged in food stamp fraud.[4]
Current Funding and Eligibility
The current income limits are listed in Table 1. In order to receive SNAP benefits, most households must have both a gross income under 130 percent of the poverty level and a net income under 100 percent of the poverty level. Households with an elderly or disabled member need only have a net income under 100 percent of the poverty line.
Furthermore, households in which all members receive public assistance (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, formerly Aid to Families with Dependent Children, and Supplemental Security Income) are automatically eligible.
Additionally, households are permitted to have $2,000 ($3,250 for households with a senior or disabled person) in "countable resources," which include banks accounts, vehicles, and some other household assets.
Recipients are allowed to make deductions which determine the difference between the household's gross and net incomes. Twenty percent of earned income may also be deducted, as well as a standard deduction of $147 for a household with one to three members, or $155 for larger households. Households may deduct some expenses, including child care (when necessary for work, training, or education), child support, medical bills, and in some cases shelters and utilities costs.[5]
ABAWDs ages 18-50 are still generally limited to three months of SNAP benefits within a three year period if they do not work or participate in workfare or workforce training programs.[6] However, in some areas these requirements can be waived. Employment and training grants are used to assist SNAP participants with attaining, retaining, and training for work opportunities.
The Food Stamp Act of 1964 stipulated that the federal government funds benefits (and bears responsibility for authorization of retailers and wholesalers), and the states handle certification and issuance. The costs of administering the program are shared between the federal government and the states. For most activities the federal government pays 50 percent. However, the federal government pays for 100 percent of employment and training grants, and nutrition education programs, and 75 percent of the administration costs for Indian reservations.
Analysis of Recovery Participation Data
The expansion of the program had a predictable effect: use of the program rose. This can be seen from our analysis of 36 months of data for the five most recent recession recoveries from 1980 to the present, beginning in the month the recession ended. (June 2012 figures are the latest data available for SNAP participation.) We examine the 1980 recession from January 1980 to July 1980; the 1981–82 recession from July 1981 to November 1982; the 1990–91 recession from July 1990 to March 1991; the 2001 recession from March 2001 to November 2001; and the most recent 2007–09 recession, from December 2007 to June 2009.
Figure 1 shows that SNAP usage has been far higher both during the 2007–09 recession and thereafter than following prior recessions. In June 2009, 11.4 percent of the population was on SNAP (compared to 9.3 percent when the recession began in December 2007). Thirty-six months afterward, in June 2012, the percent of the population on SNAP had increased by 3.5 percentage points, to 14.9 percent.
The 2001 recession saw an increase of 2.1 percentage points in the 36 months following the end of the recession, from 6.5 percent at the end of the recession to 8.6 percent. The level of usage and the increase were dramatically lower than the recession of 2007–09.
During the three-year period following the 1991 recession, the percentage of people using food stamps rose by 1.6 percentage points, from 9.2 percent to 10.8 percent.
In contrast, the percentage of people who used food stamps declined during the three-year period after the 1980s recessions, by just under one percentage point after the 1981–82 recession, and by over half a percentage point following the 1980 recession.
The length of the recession does not have a direct relationship to the increase (or decrease) in food stamp usage during the recovery (see Table 3). While the 18-month 2007–09 recession ending in June 2009 yielded a 3.5 percentage point increase in the share of the population using SNAP benefits, the 16-month recession ending November 1982 saw a 0.9 percentage point decrease. Of course, there are many factors at play, and one of the most important is likely how prolonged employment effects were during recoveries from these recessions.
States
June 2012 data show while nationwide participation was 15 percent, state participation rates vary from 6 percent to 22 percent (with 23 percent of District of Columbia residents on food stamps.) The wide variation in participation can be explained by two main factors: differences in state economies and variation in the eligibility rules adopted by individual states. Figure 5 presents the unemployment rates as well as the share of the population receiving SNAP benefits. Contrary to what might be expected, the unemployment rate and food stamp participation rate do not appear to have a strong relationship. This would suggest that the differences in eligibility and other administrative standards play a large role in varying participation rates. One consistent relationship is that, with the exceptions of California and New Jersey, the percentage of the population on food stamps always exceeded the state's unemployment rate. California residents have a low participation rate because in SNAP because SSI recipients receive a state SSI supplement instead of SNAP benefits.[7]

States have the ability to place some restrictions on SNAP use. States have some control over the administration of deductions, which can only amount to the difference between gross and net household income. For example, states can choose whether or not to exclude some or all of the value of the household's primary vehicle when assessing income and countable resources. Thirty-nine states exclude any vehicle value when assessing a household's resources, 11 states exclude the value of one or more vehicles, and three states "exempt an amount higher than the SNAP's standard auto exemption (currently set at $4,650) from fair market value to determine countable resource value of a vehicle."[8] States may also choose to allow exemptions for homeless shelter costs up to $143, and utility costs.[9] A complete list of state options is listed in Table 4.

Fraud
According to the USDA's Office of Research Analysis, rates of fraud have been declining. In a March 2011 report entitled The Extent of Trafficking in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: 2006–2008, the Department summarized trafficking data for several summary periods. In 1993 the total amount of SNAP benefits reached $22 billion.[10] Of these, $811 million, or about 3.8 percent, were diverted by trafficking. Six hundred and sixty million dollars, a rate of 3.5 percent, were trafficked between 1996 and 1998. From 1999 to 2002, the average annual trafficking amount was $393 million, or 2.5 percent of the total benefits, and from 2002 to 2005, the rate decreased to one percent with $241 million per year being misused. In 2006–08, though the trafficking amount increased to $330 million annually, the rate remained one percent.[11]
Conclusion
The increase in food stamp usage following the most recent 2007–09 recession vis-à-vis the smaller increases in other recessions is troubling. Designing and administering a social safety net is a balancing act. While assisting and empowering those who are truly in need, we must guard against creating perverse incentives to depend on public assistance for long term sustenance.
It is important to acknowledge that unemployment rate has remained above 8 percent for 43 months, since February 2009, which is longer than in any other recession since 1980. However, Americans experienced unemployment over 8 percent for 27 months from November 1981 to January 1984, but ultimately saw a decrease in food stamp usage during the 36 months following that recession. The prolonged unemployment effects of the 2007–09 recession are partly responsible for the growth in current food stamp usage, but cannot fully explain it. More likely, increased eligibility, income deductions, and benefit levels have precipitated unprecedented growth in the program.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is to be applauded for making strides in combating fraud, allowing state flexibility in administration, and providing the neediest citizens with choices in how to best fulfill their dietary needs. But the data beg the question: Does 15 percent of our population truly qualify as the neediest among us?

There is NO American Embassy in Lybia

This will no doubt get plastered all over the web, but like just about anything I put up, it originated here. WE TOTALLY HAVE THE SCAMMING MEDIA BY THE BALLS HERE, WE CAN WAKE UP THE SHEEP WITH THIS, ARCHIVE AND POST!!!

So how, PRAY TELL, was a U.S. consulate raided there, people murdered there, and butt raped in the name of Mohammed? This is BEYOND wag the dog!

Here is the link to the Department of State web site, with a complete list of All U.S. embassies, consulates, and diplomatic missions world wide. http://www.usembassy.gov/ There is one in Libya, obviously in Tripoli. And I will state right now that I have that Embassy page saved and captured, in case someone decides to bury this by faking Benghazi in for a while.
To further bolster this fact, Here is Google Maps of Benghazi Libya. Delete Benghazi Libya from the search window, and type the word EMBASSY or CONSULATE there. Because one does not exist in Benghazi, it will throw you to an alternative location near you. Here is the Wikipedia list, no doubt soon to be faked, it will happen fast here Wont last long and if any fakes get thrown in, well, there are TONS of lists out there, and I will just snag another. They can't bury this lie.

No wonder the Libyans are pissed! Is ANY of this real? Are there ANY embassy raids or riots happening ANYWHERE? This kind of desperate lying would indeed be used if an attack on Iran was SO IMMINENT THAT THE CONSEQUENCES OF GETTING CAUGHT IN THE LIE ARE IRRELEVANT. All they need is to fake it till they make the vote, and then say OOPS, we got the story wrong.
This begs the question, WHERE did the pictures and video come from? Answer. The U.S. and Israel are so guilty of so many war crimes that this type of footage is commonplace in archives. Since the consulate does not exist, they can put up any picture of any building they want and call it that, and no one is going to say "that is not what it looks like".
Many of you are worried about what is coming next. They handed us the silver bullet. Please use this bullet to shoot out the heart of the media werewolf, THIS IS THE BIG CHANCE. This lie is SO BRAZEN and SO OBVIOUS that it should be enough to tip the balance and destroy the credibility of CNN, FOX, ABC, YOU NAME IT, ONCE AND FOR ALL WITH ANYONE. Don't miss this chance, because once awaken to the fact that the media really does lie, a blinded lamb will often go bull stomping crazy.
And with the darkness of this hour, we definitely need it.

This article has withstood the scrutiny of several people on the forum who worked through the night to protect the credibility of this web site (and I thank them). One of them pointed out THIS ARTICLE, which speaks of the reopening of the U.S. embassy in Tripoli on August 27, which had to be rebuilt new after the war. Don't let this confuse you, there is no Benghazi embassy, consulate, or diplomatic mission too new to be in any record. GO HANG THEM.

On top of this, the various news agencies can't even get the location of the consulate straight, proof of a bullshit story.

The Daily Mail says it's here
And the Guardian says it's here (you have to click the little arrow that says next to make their animation work.
Since the consulate is a fiction, both pictures will do because NO ONE is going to be able to check up on the story anyway. Last I heard, the State Department is no longer answering questions with regard to the embassy, probably because people can't figure out where it really is.

Article dated 6-6-2012 speaks of a "Benghazi embassy", which in the current wag is being called a "consulate" or "mission".

One of the forum members found what may have been a toe dip propaganda piece dated 6-6 2012, where a story of a bombing against this "benghazi embassy" was floated to see if anyone would call the media on it's bullshit. There was no significant coverage of this topic on ANY American news outlet, which I believe is fishy. If you were going to do a test run for a fictitious embassy, it would be best to do it in a limited way. My guess is they floated this story ahead of time to see if it would hold up before using this fictitious embassy for a major propaganda run in the U.S. and I simply do not believe CNNNBCABCFOXASS would not have been ALL OVER such a bombing. No comments from the President? Yeah right! Let's see a photo of this "Benghazi embassy" dated prior to Sep11. Even these articles dated June 6 do not have that, nor have we found any pictures anywhere else.

And if this "Benghazi embassy" was around 4 months ago, how long before that did it exist? Why are they calling it an "embassy" in this article, and a consulate/mission in the current rip? How long would it take the state department, Wikipedia, and all other web sites, including ones that update daily, to show this "mission?" Is (a minimum) of four months enough? Oh, I know, it was run by OSAMA BIN LADEN, and therefore was not a favorite, and he is crazy, which is why it has been called a CONSULATE, an EMBASSY, and a "DIPLOMATIC MISSION" in the various reports, three representations so different that they are not the same thing at all! That works in fiction I guess!

VIRTUALLY ASSURED - War on Iran given a GO

A reminder to Israel - Giving the world ANOTHER Fukushima will be politically unpopular, and this time you WILL get caught, even among the totally unaware

The attacks on the U.S. embassies are virtually assured to be Mossad operations

Israel has a long history of staging false flag events. Don't be fooled, there are NOT riots all over the Arab world simply because of a stupid movie insulting Mohammed. The Muslims deal with that all the time and are not so thin skinned. It's a virtual certainty Israel is banking on Americans being stupid enough to fall for it, and to fall for it WOULD be stupid because:
The first embassy attack came on 911, which is an Israeli terror holiday, and a day of dread for Muslims. It also is embedded in the American psyche, and there really are a lot of "chicken brains" out there who might fall for such a coincidence.
In addition to this, Canada suddenly shuttered it's Iranian embassy in a very childish and abrupt way, with no provocation to justify it. Look for a false flag in Canada once Israel is done having fun in the Arab world, to turn public opinion against Iran. As it is, many Americans are unable to discern the difference between Iran and Bahrain, or any other Islamic nation. I'd bet a $50 that over half of the war mongering crowd could not find Iran on a globe.
Then there was the idiotic Hezbollah bust at the Mexican border, COME ON NOW, THAT was stupid! The only thing Hezbollah would be able to get through the Mexican desert would be an old duffel bag on a retired Honda three wheeler. But we just GOTTA have that sleeper cell cover story for that new false flag terror attack likely to soon happen on American or Canadian soil.

Most importantly

Yesterday a report came out of Israel that they had MASSIVELY mobilized their military. And WAY TOO SOON for any "you insulted Mohammed" riots to cause it. All this stuff is coinciding around a singularity in time, a singularity which has Israel at it's center as a probable culprit. And the outlook is not so good. Here is the report out of Israel, which will be followed with my final comments -

War in the Middle East appears to be imminent

From Steve Quayle Alerts
"My brother and his family live in Jerusalem - he is a minister - his office is close to one of Israel 's largest underground military bases.
He called me last night which is very unusual - usually it is email.
He called to tell me that he is sending his family back to the US immediately due to what he is seeing happen within the last week and what he is being told by his military contacts in both the Israel and US military.
He said he is seeing with his own eyes military movements the likes of which he has never seen in his 20+ years in Israel .
What he called a massive redeployment and protective tactics of forces is underway.
Over the last two days he has seen anti-aircraft missile deployments throughout the Jerusalem area including 3 mobile units that he can see from his office windows.
In addition, he has seen very large Israeli armored columns moving fast toward the Sinia where Egypt has now moved in Armor.
There are reports of the top military leaders meeting with Israel 's Sr. Rabi which is something that has happened preceding every prior military campaign.
His admonition is to watch carefully and pray for Israel and its people.
He is convinced that barring something extraordinary Israel will attack Iran - with or without the US - and very soon.
It is the belief in Israel that Obama does not stand with Israel but with the Arab countries.
He has told me before that Israel will saber rattle from time to time but that this time is very different from what he is seeing and hearing.
He was at the Wailing Wall 2 days ago and there were hundreds of IDF soldiers there. As he was leaving he passed at least 20 military buses full of soldiers in route to the wall.
He has never seen this before either."
My comments
Israel is a nation that won't stick it's neck out when it could get it's head cut off. Iran could easily do that. So expect Israel to use their nuclear weapons as an opening volley, and to do it in a despicable way that levels Iran. Don't be surprised by a death toll over 10 million if Israel goes ahead with this. Israel will NOT target only Iran's nuclear facilities, Israel will attempt to smash Iran in it's entirety, and absolutely will if they believe that a sneak nuclear attack would prevent a single Jewish death. Iran has tens of thousands of missiles capable of reaching Israel, and prior to all of Israel and America's game playing in Syria, there were additional tens of thousands more there. With Syria neutralized, Israel is now free to go in and destroy Iran, and America has already previously stated and agreed that if Iran does even ONE thing to Israel to defend itself, America will step in and smash Iran on Israel's behalf.
In conjunction with this attack, expect Israel to cut the sub sea internet cable that connects Iran to the outside world, so the atrocities will be slow to be revealed, that is IF they are EVER revealed.
The following is not intended to be understood by most readers
There is a way to know if nukes were used, cut cable or not. I suggest now is a good time for anyone who has a storage scope to set it up to capture the EMP signature of any nuclear weapons in use. The EMP signature has nothing to do with the seismic signature. To capture an EMP signature, just go to the hardware store and buy a spool of Romex electrical wire, leave it in a coil, and hook ONE end of One of the conductors in it up to the scope input, and the other end of the SAME conductor to ground. Set the scope up for event capture, and if you have a multi channel scope, set one channel to capture an event that is at 10 mhz, and will be 8 cycles in length, another channel for the same at 1 mhz, and another channel at 100 khz, if available. Romex has 3 conductors. EMP's vary. So that will cover all possible ranges the emp from a nuke could show up at.
Of course, you will need to put a coil with at least a few millihenries of inductance on the ground side, and perhaps a 1 nanofarad capacitor at the scope input, and that type of setup will want to pick up all types of environmental noise but if you play with it to reduce the noise or build any sort of circuit to tune out the noise it ought to work. If you are the type that would have that sort of test equipment you should be able to come up with something that will work with whatever situation you have. Obviously, if you want to capture the higher frequency, a smaller coil would be used. I am suggesting a coil to mitigate the need for an enormous antenna.

Unfortunately I can't tell you how strong a signal is going to be, so guess. If you scope has headroom, use it. You stand NO chance of blowing up a scope using it this way because scopes are robust and Iran for most people is on the other side of the world and the signal is likely to be very weak. It will appear as a sinewave that starts with a peak, tapers to a lower peak on the next cycle, a lower peak on the next cycle, down to extinction right around cycle 8. Look at the wave on the front of a Dorito's bag. That is the stylized EMP from the Sumatra nuke. I never got down to the details on that one with this site, but that wave shape on the front of a doritos bag is in fact a nuclear EMP waveform that has been italicized, and it is the one that India published for the boxing day tsunami.
On your scope, THIS is what you are looking for:

Of course, this has been stylized, this wave form will be oriented straight up and down on your scope and not leaning, and not italicized. I guess the joke is "atomic crunch". This became the Dorito's logo approximately five months after the boxing day tsunami. This came in at around 10 MHZ because the nuke was detonated under water. Most likely this joke was pulled at a lower level and the upper management is unaware. The "elite" get a laugh out of putting their crimes in plain sight.
Hopefully if people set up their scopes to capture this, Israel will not dare because if enough people capture this it will not stay hidden, and secrecy for these people is 95 percent of victory. There are a gazillion storage scopes out there, unlike seismographs which are easy to control and censor on account of scarcity. Absent Romex, even a coil of speaker wire will probably do, any coil of wire with an inductance low enough to not block a 10 mhz signal or one of the lower frequencies (I would suggest setting it up for 1 mhz if your scope only has 1 channel) and it will be hit and miss results because there is no way to know the specifics of a nuclear EMP, and if you don't know which bomb and how it will be detonated (air burst, surface burst, sub surface burst) it will take a bit of luck to capture it. Air bursts are asymmetrical if close to the ground, and sub surface bursts tend to be symmetrical and at a higher frequency because the EMP will be shaped by it's environment and a confined environment will push the frequency up. I could go into the why aspect but I don't want to write a book right now and if what I have written here is not clear to you, ignore it, this is meant to be understood by a fraction of one percent of the people out there, which will hopefully be enough to deter Israel from doing it.

General Motors pushing U.S. to sell stake: report

(MarketWatch)The Treasury Department is resisting General Motors' push for the government to sell off its stake in the auto maker, The Wall Street Journal reports. Following a $50 billion bailout in 2009, the U.S. taxpayers now own almost 27% of the company. But the newspaper said GM executives are now chafing at that, saying it hurts the company's reputation and its ability to attract top talent due to pay restrictions. Earlier this year, GM (NYSE:GM) presented a plan to repurchase 200 million of the 500 million shares the U.S. holds with the balance being sold via a public offering. But officials at the Treasury Department were not interested as selling now would lead to a multibillion dollar loss for the government, the newspaper noted.

Lies: US government's one billion rounds of ammunition

(NaturalNews) The alternative media scored a huge victory last week with the joint coverage of the U.S. government's purchase of over one billion rounds of anti-personnel "hollow point" ammunition. The ammunition is to be use domestically, not by the military.

The story broke on sites like www.DrudgeReport.com www.InfoWars.com and www.NaturalNews.com - all top sites run by independent, intelligent journalists who dare to report the truth rather than the corporatized fictions spewed by the mainstream media. Breaking the story, InfoWars.com uncovered documents revealing huge purchases of hollow-point ammunition, which is illegal to use in war because it violates the Geneva convention. Those purchases include:

• 750 million rounds of ammo purchased by the Department of Homeland Security (http://www.infowars.com/dhs-to-purchase-another-750-million-rounds-of...)

• 174,000 rounds of ammo purchased by the Social Security Administration (http://www.infowars.com/social-security-administration-to-purchase-17...)

NaturalNews covered this earlier in the week in an article entitled "The U.S. government's coming war with the American people: Insane quantities of govt. ammo purchases point to only one purpose"
www.naturalnews.com/036802_DHS_ammunition_shooting_war.html

We had also covered the DHS's previous purchase of 450 million rounds of hollow-point ammo in an article published in April of 2012:

Thanks to InfoWars, Drudge, NaturalNews and other alternative news websites, word about these ammo purchases -- which total over 1.4 billion rounds of ammo when you add up all the contracts -- has begun to spread so far and wide that the mainstream media was forced to try to destroy the story.

So now, in a desperate effort to try to diffuse this story -- which is really a story about the U.S. government stockpiling ammo to be used against the American people -- the media is focusing on the Social Security Administration ammo purchase of 174,000 rounds... a tiny drop in the bucket compared to the 1.4 billion rounds of ammo so far acquired by the Department of Homeland Security.

The SSA, it turns out, explains away the 174,000 rounds of ammo it purchased by saying, essentially, "We needed the ammo."

The SSA has hundreds of armed agents running around the country with guns, didn't you know? As the SSA itself states, "These investigators have full law enforcement authority, including executing search warrants and making arrests. They use traditional investigative techniques, and they are armed when on official duty." (http://cnsnews.com/news/article/social-security-administration-explai...)

Okay, so wait a second. First of all, since when did the social security administration need hundreds of armed agents with .357 rounds of hollow point ammo running around the country? What exactly are they doing with these guns? Shouldn't they technically be calling local sheriffs if they need assistance from peace officers? I'm pretty sure that when Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law in 1935, it didn't say anything about the SSA having "hundreds of armed social security agents running around the country with hollow point ammunition." Somehow, the SSA granted themselves this power and just ran with it.

But the bigger fact is what they're not telling you: 174,000 rounds of ammo is almost nothing compared to the 1.4 billion rounds of ammo being purchased by the DHS. And to my knowledge, nobody has explained why the DHS needs 1.4 billion rounds of ammo.

Look at it this way: If the "B" shown below represents 174,000 rounds of ammo:

B

(This is how much ammo the Social Security Administration is buying.)

... then the following list of B's represents 1.4 billion, which is what DHS is buying:

That's what 1.4 billion bullets looks like. In case you haven't yet done the math, that's enough bullets for the government to shoot every single American more than four times.

But the mainstream media only wants you to focus on the single "B" -- the 174,000 rounds of ammo purchased by the SSA. You're supposed to ignore the other 8,000 "B's" representing the bullets being purchased by the DHS.

This is called media sleight of hand, and it's a mind game being played by the mainstream media, including Fox News which is playing right along with the SSA's attempted dismissal of all this:
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/08/17/agencies-tamp-down-specula...

In contrast to Fox News and its dumbed-down coverage, a far more intelligent article on the matter appeared in the Daily Caller, written by Major General Jerry Curry, USA (Ret.):
http://dailycaller.com/2012/08/17/who-does-the-government-intend-to-s...

What is the purpose of all this ammunition?

The federal government, when asked about the ammo, essentially says, "We need it!"

And why do they need it? For their own "safety," of course. "[Armed SSA personnel] also are called to respond to threats against Social Security offices, employees, and customers," explains the SSA. So the government, in other words, needs ammo for its safety.

So why are American citizens who "stockpile" ammo for the exact same reason considered "radical" or "extreme" or even "terrorists?"

When the government buys ammo for the safety of its workers, that's a good thing, you see. But when YOU buy ammo for the safety of your own family, that's a BAD thing, we're told. Citizens don't need ammo. Only the government needs ammo. That's the big media lie you're being told right now.

This idea of the government having a monopoly of force is, by the way, the principle arms control argument of Adolf Hitler, who penned his famous "Nazi Weapons Law of 1938" which was copied virtually word-for-word into the U.S. Gun Control Act of 1968.

Just as in Nazi Germany, the modern U.S. government believes only the government needs ammo, not the citizens!

Self defense is a "Divine Right"

I've just released a new two-part documentary called "The Divine Right of Self Defense."

It shows how weapons -- including the right to hurl projectiles at predators -- are found throughout the natural world in plants, mammals, insects and birds. This right is common across the natural world because it is a "divine right."

When pigs fly

Found the on a blog over at RealWorldReport.com and had to laugh! This is crazy! Now I know how to smuggle anything into the country, just let the pig eat it and wait till we land! WoW!!

"Here we have it again, someone was paid to come up this non-sense. Can we put a dollar value on what it took to get this down on paper?"

A federal agency has issued a new ruling on pork — but not the kind most commonly associated with Washington. The U.S. Department of Transportation has determined that airline passengers may board a plane with a potbellied pig if the animal is there to lend “emotional support.” The ruling was included in a manual published by the DOT in the Federal Register on July 5, “Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Disability in Air Travel: Draft Technical Assistance Manual.” The manual states: “A passenger arrives at the gate accompanied by a potbellied pig. She claims that the potbellied pig is her service animal. What should you do? “Generally, you must permit a passenger with a disability to be accompanied by a service animal. However, if you have a reasonable basis for questioning whether the animal is a service animal, you may ask for some verification.” The manual defines a service animal as an “animal individually trained to perform functions to assist a person with a disability; animal that has been shown to have the innate ability to assist a person with a disability.” If the verification is satisfactory, potbellied pigs, which can weigh as much as 300 pounds, must be accepted aboard the plane. Wendy Ponzo, vice president of the North American Potbellied Pig Association, told CNS News that the pigs can be trained to open and close doors and use a litter box. “They also seem to have a sense if the owner is not feeling well to stay by them,” said Ponzo, who has multiple sclerosis. Miniature horses and monkeys can also qualify as service animals and be brought on a plane, according to the manual. But carriers can bar passengers from bringing aboard rodents, ferrets, spiders, snakes and other reptiles — not to mention snow globes, sporting goods, and liquids over three ounces. One more bureaucratic tidbit from the DOT: A carrier that declines to allow a passenger to bring an animal aboard a plane must document the decision in writing and provide it to the passenger within 10 days.
